Class of 2011 graduates at SoBA's commencement.

The UCR School of Business Administration (SoBA) conferred degrees to the class of 2011 at its annual commencement ceremony held June 10.

This year’s keynote speaker was Robert Sun (MBA 1987), who encouraged business graduates to pursue their dreams, even amid trying economic times. “The global marketplace has many opportunities for you,” he said in his speech. “So I suggest you put on your business hat, look for the opportunities that still exist, even in this difficult economy. What we know for sure is that if you don’t have a dream, you are lost. So dare to dream.”

This was also the first year SoBA conferred degrees to students of the Anderson Executive MBA Program, which launched in 2009. (Read “UCR Business School to Graduate First Ever EMBA Cohort”). Friday night was the first time that Brian Rojas, who was part of the inaugural EMBA class, walked at a commencement ceremony. “Now I know what I was missing,” he said. “It was incredible, because this was the biggest accomplishment in my life.”

Kathy Ramirez, who received her B.S. in business administration, became the first in her family on Friday night to attain a university degree. “I feel great, especially being a first-generation graduate,” she said. “It feels amazing.”

Vipan Gupta, father of MBA graduate Neeraj Gupta, was among the parents in the crowd cheering for their graduates. “I feel very proud of my son,” he said. “And the event was very professionally done. The best ceremony I’ve attended.”

As SoBA’s newest alumni, business graduates are encouraged to join the SoBA Alumni Network via Facebook and LinkedIn to keep connected with their alma mater and former classmates.
