Master of Finance Program Receives STEM Classification

International graduates can work in the United States for 36 months

The Master of Finance program at the UCR School of Business has achieved classification as a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program. This classification allows international students in the program three years in the United States to work in their area of study after graduation.

The Master of Finance program, launched in 2013, is designed for professional advancement and provides full preparation to pursue certifications as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

Eighty-nine percent of the incoming class in October 2017 are international students. “International students and the expertise they bring are a vital contribution to the educational environment at the School of Business,” says Yunzeng Wang, dean of the School of Business.  “The extended time to gain experience in American companies is an advantage to their formal education and benefits the community and businesses they work in.”

The newly certified STEM designation significantly boosts the employment opportunities available in the U.S. for our international graduate students, notes Heidi Cuthbertson, Associate Director of the Career Development Center at the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management

The STEM certification allows international students to apply for 36 months of OPT (Optional Practical Training) upon graduation for professional, temporary employment that is directly related to their area of study. This is 24 months longer than they could stay without the STEM certification.

“It is often a risk financially, but more so in terms of company hours spent on training and integration, for an organization to hire an international student with only one year of OPT availability and no H1-B sponsorship guarantee,” says Ms Cuthbertson.

The 24-month extension that is now possible with this STEM-designated program encourages companies to hire competitive international students.
