Professor Timothy Gubler Wins Prestigious Sumantra Ghoshal Best Paper Award

Professor Timothy Gubler was awarded the prestigious Sumantra Ghoshal Award for best paper at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting 2017 in Atlanta this August.

The Academy of Management is the preeminent professional association for business management and organization scholars. The Sumantra Ghoshal Research and Practice Award goes to the paper that best advances research while also deriving important implications for practice. The award honors the contributions to both research and practice made by Sumantra Ghoshal.

Professor Gubler’s paper, titled “Connected, but Qualified? Social Affiliations, Human Capital, and Service Professional Performance," explores how social ties between service professionals and consumers impact outcomes in transactions. Using data on social ties determined by Mormon Church boundaries in Utah, in conjunction with real estate data, he finds that when consumers rely on real estate agents they know, they are more likely to get an inexperienced or underqualified agent, leading to inferior outcomes. The paper is currently undergoing revisions for future publication in Organization Science.

Timothy Gubler is Assistant Professor of Management (Strategy) at the UCR School of Business. His research investigates the role of individuals in firm performance and strategy, and lies at the intersection of strategy, human capital, and human resources. He holds a PhD in Business Strategy from the Olin Business School, Washington University in St. Louis.
