Susan Atherton Endowed Graduate Award Fund

Endowed fund established to help local students pursing a graduate degree at the UCR Anderson Graduate School of Management.

Susan Atherton (’77) has pledged a gift of $145,000 that will establish the Susan Atherton Endowed Graduate Award Fund. The fund will support students from Southern California pursuing a graduate degree at the UCR Anderson Graduate School of Management.

I was very fortunate to receive a degree from the UCR School of Business Administration which allowed me to benefit from a very successful career in the high-tech industry,” says Susan. “It is important to me to give back so other students may benefit from what the School has to offer.”

After graduating with a BA in Administrative Studies from UC Riverside in 1977, Susan Atherton served for 25 years in executive management positions in the enterprise software and cloud computing industries. Employers included NCR Corporation, GE Information Systems, Oracle Corporation, Rightpoint and DoubleClick.

A noted philanthropist, Susan has served in leadership positions for the American Red Cross and Humane Society of the United States. As a passionate supporter of education, she has served her alma mater as a Trustee for the UCR Foundation and as an Executive Fellow in the School of Business Administration, mentoring students preparing for careers in business.

I have had the opportunity to mentor several UCR business students, which has been a very rewarding experience.  One of these fine students, Ms. Alyssa Stump, did not enjoy the financial family support that I did while attending college.  She funded her own undergraduate degree and has now been accepted, with scholarships, into UCR's MBA program.  It is committed students like Alyssa that I hope to help with this endowment.

The Susan Atherton Endowed Graduate Award is established in support of the AGSM Scholars Initiative, which was established to support students from Southern California pursuing a graduate degree at the UCR Anderson Graduate school of Management.  Leveraging the matching gift initiative made available through the A. Gary Anderson Family Foundation, this fund will have a double impact.

Alyssa Stump, who will be starting the MBA program this fall has been mentored by Susan for over a year. “Having a mentor like Susan is like having the best role model any student could ask for. Her impact on my education both inside and outside the classroom has been extraordinary.

Over Alyssa’s four years as an undergraduate student, she has won several scholarships. “Without these scholarships, I would not have been able to commit to UCR's full-time MBA program, and I would not have been able to be as involved in extracurricular projects as I am.”

Like Alyssa, scholarships for students who receive little or no financial aid are tremendously impactful. “It allows us to clock in less hours at work and devote more time to studying and getting involved in volunteer activities,” she says.
