UCR Alumnus Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year

UC Riverside alumnus Darin Anderson was named Ernst & Young’s 2016 Entrepreneur of the Year in Professional Services for Orange County and Inland Empire.

“I attribute much of the success I’ve achieved in my career to the strong foundation, close friendships, and successful business partnerships fostered during my time at UC Riverside,” said the enthusiastic Anderson.

Anderson is chairman and CEO of Salas O’Brien, the leading specialty facilities planning, engineering, design, commissioning, and construction management firm with a maniacal focus on quality delivery. He said the award is “a wonderful recognition for our dedicated team and employee-owners as we have experienced over 1,200 percent growth this past decade when the industry as a whole has had zero.”

With offices across the country, Salas O’Brien serves clients including, Microsoft, Ritz-Carlton, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Bloom Energy, Starbucks, Four Seasons, and numerous universities including Stanford, Cal-Tech, USC, LSU, Texas A&M, UCSF and UC Berkeley, as well as numerous hospitals, school districts, cities, counties and federal agencies.

Anderson energetically shared that “Salas O’Brien’s core function is working on large campuses and facilities delivering critical system infrastructure that create massive positive environmental improvements in energy and utility savings as well as system reliability and performance. By using less power, supplying cleaner alternative power and efficiently delivering utilities, we are eliminating millions of pounds of carbon emissions and kWh of electricity every year for our clients and saving them millions of dollars in operating costs. ‘Designing for the good of our world’ is our core driver—and key to our success.”

Anderson earned a bachelor’s in business administration from UC Riverside in 1989 as well as an MBA at the university’s A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management. He has stayed highly involved with the School of Business, where he currently serves as the chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Council. He is also on the Board of the UCR Alumni Association and in July will chair the Foundation Board of Trustees.

The EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award is the world’s most prestigious business award for entrepreneurs. As the first and only truly global award of its kind, Entrepreneur of the Year celebrates those who are building and leading successful, growing and dynamic business, recognizing them through regional, national, and global award programs in more than 60 countries.

UC Riverside is extremely proud of all of our alumni and their tremendous success. We especially want to thank Darin Anderson for his continuous support of the UC Riverside’s School of Business.
