Student Success Stories: Austin Claiborne

"When I first came to UCR as a first year, I told myself I would travel and do as many internships as I can."

Austin Claiborne is a 4th Year Undergraduate student majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. During his career as a full-time undergrad student, Austin has interned for companies such as Kohl’s Department Store, the Washington Redskins’ Radio station ESPN 980, and SPORTALK app. He now interns with the Los Angeles Sparks Women’s Basketball Team in the Social Media Department. His responsibilities include creating weekly content for all channels of social media. He also researches social media analytics and compiles it in their social media database, for future research.

Not only has he gained countless experiences through his internships, UCR has also provided Austin with opportunities of great travel programs that has helped him expand his leadership and career-aimed skills. Austin has traveled to Washington D.C through the UCDC Program where he gained experience in the field of Economic Policy, Social Policy, and International Affairs, and recently traveled to Oxford, London through the SoBA Entrepreneurial Leadership Program where he learned to develop entrepreneurial creativity and leadership capabilities that will be applied to any business environment.

SoBA has provided Austin with the resources needed to help him decide on his concentration to pursue as a career. His plans after graduating this upcoming spring is to work with a sports organization in either their Marketing or Client Services Department.

“I had a passion for sports ever since I was a kid but it wasn’t until high school where I decided to pursue that as a career, but on the business side. And in my time here at UC Riverside, I have really been able to find my calling in this field.”

Austin emphasizes finding something that you are passionate about and plan out everything you want to do during your time at UCR to accomplish it.
