Undergraduate Business Program

(May 17, 2010)

As another schoolyear draws to a close, hard-at-work MBA students (both first-year and graduating second-year students) set aside their textbooks to celebrate their accomplishments of the past year at the annual MBA Banquet, held May 15 at the Alumni & Visitor Center. The event was an opportunity for students to momentarily set aside the rigors of schoolwork, interact with SoBA faculty and staff in a non-academic environment, and enjoy the fruits of their labor for the past year.

To kick off the program, Dean David W. Stewart recognized the students' many efforts this year and commended their involvement in the community, citing the MBA Food Drive during the holiday season as well as their participation in the Cesar Chavez 5k, which resulted in a fundraising challenge win for the second year in a row. Stewart reminded the students in attendance of the bright futures ahead of them, and held up as examples of what lies ahead stories of several business alumni who had gone on to meet professional success after a graduate education at UCR, including David Gutierrez of Ernst & Young (who was also in the audience).

Later in the night, Student Association External Affairs Vice President Erin Peach presented the first-ever Anderson "Andy" Appreciation Award to Ernst & Young's Andy Sale (Peach noted that it was a humorous coincidence that the "Andy" Award in its first year was presented to a namesake). With an accounting background, Sale has been charged with overseeing the ballot process and guarding voting ballot tabulations for the Primetime Emmy Awards for many years. In awards-ceremony-style, the name of the winner of the Andy Award was hand-delivered in a sealed suitcase to Peach, who then announced Sale as the recipient.

This year's MBA Banquet also saw the handing down of MBA Student Association Board duties to the next schoolyear's successors. After Student Association President Eugene Chin told the crowd of student accomplishments for the past year, as well as students' post-graduation plans (earlier in the evening, a slideshow was displayed of student events the past year), he announced the new Board, to be headed by this past year's Students Affairs Vice President, Zachary Stewart.

The evening closed with the announcement of a class gift to be presented to graduating MBAs.
